What We’ve Got Planned

Fall at Clever’s SoFab Farm is a bit loud and definitely smelly for the goats. Breeding season or Rut has started for the bucks and does. While the bucks brand of cologne is rather potent, the does love it. If you choose to come for a visit, be prepared to avoid the buck pen and watch from a distance, as the smell can and does linger if it gets on you.
Depending on what we have planted, the garden will be winding up production by the first frost. Some things, like garlic, will just be getting planted. Once the frost comes, we will pull all of the plant material off to the side of the garden to compost over the winter, doing an initial mow to add to the speed of composting.
Fall also means prepping for winter and purchasing items needed for kidding season. The meat chicks that we hatched over the summer will also get processed and give needed meat to our freezer.
Make sure to regularly check the calendar so that you’ll know whenever something exciting happens. You’ll be more than welcome to join in on the fun!

Everything Tomato

September 6, 2022

Right now the tomatoes are in full swing and producing like never before. We’ve already collected around 40 lbs of tomatoes off of 8 plants and still have 4 plants that are immature yet. What has sent been eaten by us or the chickens has been canned. 5 quarts of chili base have been made, with pasta sauce and tomato sauce in the plans. I’m currently trying out Mrs. Wages packets so the vote is still out on if they were the right recipe.
Do you have a favorite recipe for garden fresh tomatoes? Feel free to share it with me via e-mail or messenger.

FAQs

Let Us Know How We Can Help You

Why don’t your goats have ears? Did they fall off?

No they didn’t lose them due to frostbite or a predator attack. Our goats are registered LaMancha. The tiny ears is a breed trait specific to the LaMancha goat. There are two categories of ear style a Lamancha is labeled with: gopher or elf ears. Gopher ears are tiny and appear to be nonexistent. Elf ears are larger and appear to have a stub of flesh attached to the nub like the tip of an elf’s ear.

What do you grow?

We grow a variety of things. In the garden it just depends on what we need in the house. It’s usually tomatoes, green beans, green peppers, peas, squash and cucumbers. Our raised beds have Blackberries, Strawberries, Asparagus and soon to have blueberries.
The orchard houses several apple trees, a few pear trees, a cherry and a peach tree.
We also have wild blackberries in our pasture that will produce a lot on a good rainy year.

Is your produce chemical free?

Technically no. I apply liquid seven on the plants just prior to bloom to reduce the amount of insects that can harm them during the stressful time of bloom. Once they bloom I only pick off pests by hand and feed as treats to the chickens. When planting tomatoes, I place two tums in the bottom to avoid blossom end rot as well as a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen but even in the amount of potassium and phosphorus that lasts until they bloom. Then once the tomatoes bloom I incorporate a lower nitrogen but higher potassium and phosphorus. I utilize bone meal for my nitrogen infusion when corn plants are knee high and just tasseling. I will not use a herbicide around the garden or animals. I do utilize insecticides on the goats and chickens to avoid or treat problems with pests like mites, fleas, or lice that are carried in by other pests like birds or mice.

Can we come see the farm?

Yes but please schedule a time as we are busy with work and school too. Evenings and weekend are best but some weekdays we are available as well. With an ever changing schedule you never know where we are. We want to give you the best tour possible and the proper amount of time to snuggle or watch whomever you decide to hang out with. Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty as our little tour guide loves taking his tourists through the mud.
